Picked up an Intern

$

Having once been an intern myself many years ago, I remember my internship counting among the worst experiences of my life that I simply stuck with because I was too stubborn to quit, haha.

It was with this memory in mind I picked up an intern to help with art and marketing, and to assist with the soon to be launched new website's aesthetics.  Everyone falls somewhere on the line of artistic to practical, and I like to think i'm somewhere in the middle, towards "practical", but Chanel is waaaaaaaaay in the art side of the spectrum.

I've been trying to help Chanel cross the vast chasm between the art student world, and the "real" world where the rubber hits the road, so I asked her to wear something business like for her second day interning for me...

The Intern, rocking a G36KE1

What she lacks in the understanding of "business casual" she makes up for in her raw artistic capability.  So far, working for the parent company, her stuff has mostly been "too artsy", so we're working on dialing her into just the right amount of artsiness with the right amount of commercial viability.

Doesn't she look like a character from "Harry Potter"?

I've had a LMT 14.5" rifle for many years now, having taken it to countless competitions and carbine classes.  It has never skipped a beat, the only malfunctions I have ever encountered were do bad ammo (case head separation), experimenting with parts, and setting up malfunctions in class to learn how to clear them.

This rifle is the one you see on Samantha here is a LMT 14.5" upper I purchased in 2008, and it's been with me through two Magpul classes, a LAV class, and countless monthly tactical rifle matches, weekly Friday night rifle leagues, etc.  In fact this rifle is the one you see in many of my earliest marketing photos:

LMT 14.5": A weapom for the modern warrior

A  trustworthy weapon for the modern warrior

My LMT 14.5" upper has seen a decent amount of hard use.  I've used it to shoot skeet (with a 300 foot vertical rock cliff as a backstop), I've shot it completely suppressed at a 3 day Magpul carbine course, and it's seen it fair share of automatic fire.  Despite all this, I recently used a throat erosion gauge on it, and found no significant wear on the throat, despite 10K or more rounds of relatively hard use!  While it hasn't encountered a military firing schedule, it's certainly not been a safe queen either.

If you are considering upgrading your old rifle, consider sending in your barrel/upper for a complete gauging by our gun smith and qualified staff.  Using precision equipment (the gauge set is $700, eek!) we measure all critical components to ensure serviceability.  Bolts should be pre-emptively replaced after 5,000 rounds anyway, as there is no economical way to detect cracks and wear on the bolt lugs.  In my case, we put in a brand new Mil Spec HPT/MPI tested bolt from Lewis Machine and Tool into my upper which has about 10K rounds.  We also checked for barrel straightness, throat erosion, firing pin protrusion, head space and bolt face specs on the new bolt, and cleared it for service!

My original configuration featured the Daniel Defense LITE rail, and a permanently attached Advanced Armament 51T flash hider. The Advanced Armament flash hider is the absolute best flash hider i've ever used.  It even over takes the M4-2000 sound suppressor I attached to it in terms of visual flash suppressor in the dark of night, given secondary flash (sparks) are inherent with sound suppressors.  This flash hider has the tendency to act as a pinging tuning fork when new... but after just 500 or so rounds of carbon build up with suppressor use, the pinging noise goes away.  iCommandos frequently complain about the noise... but what they don't realize is that all it indicates to the educated public is that said complainers don't have suppressors ;)

This build was put together before I met my current superbly qualified gun smith, I permanently attached the flash hider using a MIG welder and a lot of dremelling after a sobering experience: I had actually managed to break a pin/weld job, as well as the Rocksett with my bare hands!  After my M4-2000 got stuck after about a thousand rounds in one day at a carbine class, a friend pinned the rifle onto a bench, and I gripped on for dear life and used my body weight as leverage.  Imagine my shock and surprise when the flash hider's pin gave up before the carbon and copper fouling on the suppressor did! "Good faith" doesn't seem to apply to ATF rulings in regards to gunsmithing:  make sure your pin/weld job will destroy the barrel before it gives out on you!!!  I tried pinning/welding using the methods I found online: they simply didn't have enough power to "permanently" hold the suppressor in place (coat hanger wire?!  LOL!).  Our current gun smith laughs whenever I tell him this story...

Thankfully, my gun smith was able to repair all the superficial damage to the barrel with his $30K in machine tools, and reattach the muzzle device with awesome TIG welding skills. We swapped out the Daniel Defense LITE rail for a Centurion Arms 12" FSP rail which offers a lot more real estate without much of a weight penalty

Redneck engineering:  it works, but it's ugly

After:

LMT 14.5", refurbished by Weapon Outfitters

LMT 14.5", refurbished by Weapon Outfitters' gun smith

In its current configuration, this rifle is a lot more ergonomic for my 6'2" body, allowing me to effortlessly apply a constant, stabilizing pressure with my support hand when shooting, and increasingly overall pointability and practical accuracy.  While a FSP cut rail may take some getting used to aesthetically, its practical merits are undeniable!

LMT 14.5" upper with new life

With a new rail and a little professional refurbishing, my LMT has gone from my has been rifle, back to my favorite, haha.  It's funny how just one component can complete change the nature of the entire weapon!

We've recently helped a number of police officers upgrade their rifles as well!  We've turned down heavy HBAR barrels, added lightweight rail systems to old uppers, and also put together grip/stock packages for old patrol rifles that needed some loving.  We'll of course, be sharing those build with y'all in the near future. Be sure to give us a ring or e-mail if you have a rifle that you want to upgrade!

Knight's Armament SR-15 upper: Subtle yet significant improvements to the AR15/M16 system

$

The Knight's Armament Corporation (KAC) SR-15 Individual Weapon System (IWS) features a number of subtle and important improvements over standard AR-15/M-16 style weapons that many users are not aware of.  These improvements may not be noticable at first glance, or at all to the average user, but those in the know are always impressed by KAC's attention to detail.  Let me give you a guided tour!

When the SR-15 E3 was designed, KAC paid particular attention to look at the system as a whole.  KAC relooked the entire weapon system's operation to identify weaknesses to be addressed, as well as strengths that could be further improved.

Durability and Reliablity

AR-15/M-16 bolts all break eventually, especially under harsh military firing scheduled.  US SOCOM's special operations soldiers are advised to replaced their bolts every 5,000 rounds, given their specialized and harsh firing schedules.  SOCOM has been very interested in integrated electronic round counters to go from a reactive maintenance program, to a pro-active one, as AR15/M16 bolt failure is inevitable, and unpredictable.

The SR-15 E3 addressed the durability concerns of standard AR-15/M-16 rifles in a number of ways.  The first, and most important upgrade is the proprietary E3 bolt used on SR-15 rifles.  These bolts feature thicker bolt lugs with nearly 50% more material.  The beefed up and rounded lugs increase service life significantly.

The proprietary E3 bolt requires a proprietary barrel extension, meaning that this upgrade is not backwards compatible.  Only KAC SR-15 rifles can utilize the E3 bolt system.

The SR-15 bolt also uses two extractor springs (twice as many as standard bolts), a deep extractor channel, and optimized geometry to ensure extraction reliability under harsh conditions.  The extractor pin has also been beefed up, and is not held in place by a spring on the extractor instead of just tension.

Lastly, the SR-15 firing pin is designed to be lighter to provide faster ignition, lowered chance of slam fire, and reduces the size of the cam pin's cavity and most obvious structural weakness.

Controllability

The SR-15 is one of the lightest tactical rifles on the market, and because of Netownian phsyics (mass and force etc) one would assume felt recoil would be greater on SR-15 rifles.  As it turns out, the SR-15 manages to have its cake and it eat it too, as the barrel features two subtle improvements which are responsible for the SR-15's light recoil.

SR-15 rifles use a proprietary gas system length, along with a tuned gas port size to optimized the amount of gas delivered to the operating system.  With an optimized amount of gas, there is no excess stress placed on operating components as is common with rack grade rifles that are usually "over gassed".

The barrel itself is cold hammer forged, and on a lightweight profile, meaning that with a good butt stock pairing (Complete SR-15s use LMT SOPMOD stocks), the rifle is not at all front heavy, and very balanced and easy to point and control.

Practical Ergonomics

The SR-15 was engineered as a complete weapon system, and as such, it features some of the best ergonomics every utilized on a rifle.  Unrestrained by bureacracy or institutional inertia. KAC made a number of significant improvement to the practical ergonomics of the rifle.

Long before it became a popular trend, the SR-15 featured a cold hammer forged, lightweight profile barrel which makes the rifle superbly durable, pointable, and accurate.

There are a number of small, but nice touches on the rifle.  There are 4 QD sling swivel socket locations on the URX-II rail, affording users a lot of options.

The integrated sight features a match grade "skinny" front sight post, and is easily adjustable by hand with not tools.

The rear sight is match grade, and allows users to easily dial in for engagement up to 600 yards

In conclusion, the SR-15 upper receiver has a lot of improvements and upgrades.  While you can find similar upgrades from other companies, finding all these upgrades on one cohesive, professional designed and assembled package, all for $1299, is quite a treat.

This is a premium AR-15 style upper receiver, but there is just ONE weakness in the current configuration in my opinion.  The exposed gas block utilizes two set screws, and while i've never seen a SR-15 gas block come loose in the many SR-15 rifles and uppers i've sold, I would prefer if this gas glock was pinned in place.  Luckily, Weapon Outfitter's gun smith offers this service for $30 for users who need absolute peace of mind.

B5 Systems SOPMOD Stock

Originally designed by Crane, Naval Surface Warfare Center and produced exclusively by LMT, the SOPMOD stock has found widespread use and adaptation.

Recently, the US Army decided to solicit contractors to produce the SOPMOD stock, and B5 Systems stepped up to the plate and began producing SOPMOD stocks for the Army.   The Army provided the wrong specifications for the very first batch, and this batch ended up getting surplused... why some earlier versions of the B5 SOPMOD stock did not fit mil-spec receiver extensions without some fitting.

Once the original problem was discovered and fixed, B5 refined their development on their SOPMOD stocks, and now we have a good valued, full featured SOPMOD stock available

I compared the B5 systems stock to one of my own LMT stocks and found that aside from some very minute difference, the B5 Systems and LMT SOPMOD stocks are functionally the same with a number of minute differences.  LMT, having produced these stocks for many years, wins the fit and finish contest hands down... but the B5 does come very close, and with a more attractive price.

LMT and B5 Systems SOPMOD Stocks. Outwardly, very similar.

There are slight material differences in plastics chosen for the stock body, and rubber butt pad

Both stocks feature rubber gasket protected storage compartments.

The latches are the easiest way to tell the difference between the B5 and LMT. The LMT's latch edges are rounded. The B5s are not.

So, why take pictures of girls with guns?

$

So people have asked me, why do I want to take pictures of attractive women with firearms?

Easy!

1.  It's challenging.  Girls with guns was played out and boring before the 90s.  To take on this well worn trope that is already cheese-tastic in most people's minds is hard.

2.   Badass dudes who wear Multicam and OD green BDUs for work and get in gun fights with bad guys on a regular basis... are camera shy.  And while I think I would be doing them a disservice by revealing their IDs, I'd be disrespecting them if I used actors or wannabes instead.  Given how close I am to JBLM (1st, 2nd CCT etc) and major corporations... there are some badass clients in my neck of the woods I would hope to avoid offending :)

3.  It's fantasy.  Most of the ladies who model for me are married or have boyfriends, but it's not an uncommon wish for guys to want to date or marry a beautiful woman who could also lend a helping hand in the zombie apocalypse.  Of the ladies who model for me, Nikki Lane and Shelley Rae are the only two who shoot regularly though!  Skill at arms is rare enough in men, it is even rarer in women.

After watching "The Avengers" the other weekend, the character played by Scarlett Johansson I spent a weekend poking around the comic book shop and Wikipedia, learning about this classic comic book character.  While watching the movie, I couldn't help but think: "a rifle would be so much more useful than a pair of Glock 26s during an alien invasion".

Ares Gear Belt, Surefire Suppressor, Multitasker Tool, etc

While a rifle isn't as "cool" as a pair of handguns for comic book use, it's a far more utilitarian weapon.

A classic Marvel character, the Black Widow is one of the oldest and most recognizable Marvel characters.  Originally a Soviet spy, she of course, defects to the good guys, dates the Daredevil, and becomes a member of the Avengers.  At least, that's what Wikipedia tells me.  The fact that most of her strength comes from her training and skills instead of mutation, magic, or technology is what makes her such an interesting character for me!

As luck would have it, our friend Em had also seen the movie, and on a free afternoon we tried to capture the essence of the character with empty space in the warehouse and a rifle we had just finished putting together for a local customer.  Em's crimson red hair (she's naturally a strawberry blonde) alluded well to the Black Widow, and her upper body strength and familiarity with weapons made this character connection an easy match.

A homage to a comic book character

We imagined this as a quiet moment in a safe house somewhere.  Makes sense that a comic book character would be fond of comics right?  Em's got a copy of the awesome Marvel Max series "FURY" in her hands.

Botecelli anyone?

Changing the angles and poses slightly, we also made allusions to the masterpiece by Renaissance artist Alessandro Botecelli.  Even if you're not an art nerd, you probably know which piece we're alluding to!

Anyway, hope you enjoyed our fun little photoshoot, we'll definitely have more to come!

GA Precision Mil-Spec Rifles; The M40-A3 Sniper Rifle

Em takes aim on the M40A3

GA Precision's rifles are some of the most highly regarded precision rifles in existence, with this shop known for supplying some of the most elite snipers in the world.  The deadliest sniper in American military history, Chris Kyle, even gives a shout out to GA Precision in his book, American Sniper.

As luck would have it, a mutual friend of ours and GA Precision is on our neck of the woods, and was kind enough to lend us a GA Precision M40A3 sniper rifle, as well as a custom built Knight's Armament SR-15 rifle.

Each M40A3 by GA Precision is built to the same exacting specification as the US Marine Corps M40 was at Quantico, Virginia, and this particular rifle was actually built and owned by the owner of GA Precision, George Gardner before it found its way into my grubby little hands.  Mr. Gardner himself has visited the USMC's Precision Weapons Section, as well as the Naval Surface Warfare Center, and the Army Marksmanship Unit to gain valuable insight and experience with what goes into the rifles carried into battle by Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers.  It is with this background, that GA Precision is able to offer "MIL-SPEC Replica" rifles. The particular rifle we were able to borrow was also outfitted with an authentic Schmidt & Bender 3-12X, Mil-dot scope (as is issued on the USMC's M40 rifles).

Em was available for a day trip, so we headed to our local outdoor rifle range.  Em's been an amazing student, and her unusually good upper body strength and grounded personality have made her an excellent pistol and carbine shooter.  I figured the zen aspect of precision rifle shooting would appeal to her... and I was quite right!  Given that we were shooting only at 100 yards, we could skip over windage, elevation, spin drift, angles and anything else that was beyond pure marksmanship.  About 30 minutes of instruction and dry fire practice later, we were off!

Em makes good use of the rear sandbag

M40A3 Sniper rifle with 3-12X S&B Scope

Originally, I had intended only to take photos of Em shooting and just gloss over the actual targets:  I did not bring any match grade ammunition!  As a testament to both Em's skill and GA Precision's capabilities though, Em was able to shoot this grouping using just a rear sandbag!  This is target is truly flattering to two other crucial parts of the accuracy equation: the rifle and the shooter!

To be honest, I was quite surprised!  Didn't expect this kind of performance from a novice shooter with inexpensive ammunition.

Be sure to check out GA precision's webstore if you are interested in getting a M40A3 for yourself!

Spring.

It's been a long, brutal winter, and while some of us have gotten used to how much it sucks to be be cold all the time, it seems we've finally come to that magical time of the year where the possibilities of the long days of spring and summer are laid out bare in front of us.

I look forward to enjoying the great outdoors of this magnificent country, and enjoying the hard won freedoms afforded to me and my fellow citizens.  I'm getting my ammunition loading books out and adding kit to some builds I started over the winter... a sling here, a bipod there...

To help facilitate this, my employees and I did a quick and dirty moving inventory of our wares over 2 days, and we're now offering a spring cleaning discount code of 10% off all in stock items.  Just use "springcleaning14" during checkout to knock 10% off your order on all items (except for those from certain manufacturers who I am contractually unable to offer sales on), good until the 28th, and code cannot be combined with other discount codes.

No fear, got a spring themed one up featuring Susan Coffey.

2014 Spring Front Page

Funny thing about this photo is that we got kitted out at the last minute by the fine folks at Arc'Teryx LEAF and Combat Flip Flops with really, really hard to find stuff like female size Alpha jackets, and limited edition Atom jackets in Multicam (not even available for sale), and a scarf made in Afghanistan.

Susan is holding my perennial favorite personal upper build: a lightweight, accurate, and durable Centurion Arms build.  Centurion Arms barrel and Modular Rail system, along with a Fortis Manufacturing Aimpoint mount.

People frequently get caught up with the"stuff" in their hobbies... doesn't matter if your hobby is cars, computers, photography, painting, ice climbing, hiking... we can't help but have a little bit of attachment to the tools that help us exert our will as the subjects of our own lives.  We all know "that guy" who has a ridiculously expensive and customized (noun) but can't seem to (verb) for shit with it... whereas some other bloke with a much cheaper (noun) is amazing at (verb)ing with his affordable (noun).

In firearms this definitely seems to be fairly true for a lot of folks, especially folks who've just got into shooting, or those who've been collectors for a long, long time.  While I certainly take pride in ownership for certain firearms in my collection, most of the time... a gun's a gun's a gun.  It's just a tool and a means to an end, and the most important component of any tool is its wielder.

To illustrate this concept that I believe it so firmly, I actually used a very, very special rifle with this shot with Ethereal Rose... a friend's Colt SP-1 so old the serial number doesn't even have "SP" on it.  For all your old school gin-u-wine gun nerds... you'll notice something on the charging handle...  Brownie points who can tell me what it is!  Aside from a little customization, this rifle is in extremely good condition and I was glad to handle such a beautiful specimen... but all the while imagined it as just a utilitarian tool instead of a awesome collector's item.

Basic concept of this series was that of a lucky scavenger, with both a top of the line modern rifle, with an old school, lightweight, A1 style rifle as a quick backup: hope you like it!

Ethereal Rose spent the better part of the day in a dark, dank, creepy Titan 1 Missile nuclear silo with only the precious electricity piped in from a mobile generator outside allowing us to in the deep dark artificial cavern.

Stepping out into the sunlight just in time for the sunset in early winter was truly a treat for us.  That "look" on her face is for real, hahaha

Being a huge Fallout 3 fan, I was tickled by the new additions that Bethesda added to Fallout: New Vegas in regards to firearms and reloading.  There must be some gun nerds at that game company, but the addition of more semi realistic weapons and reloading as a gameplay mechanic was pretty refreshing.

Makeup Outfitters
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Seattle, WA - April 1, 2014 - Washington state based weapons accessories business "Weapon Outfitters", identified with its distinctive WO logo, is turning that W upside down, and abandoning the business of outfitting modern firearms in lieu of the FABULOUS makeup and women's accessories business.

Tired of beards, dip, and night vision photography, the company formerly known as Weapon Outfitters released a statement earlier today from warehouse stacked with high end weapons accessories and demo weapons that once made an Army medic exclaim:  "What the fuck is this Navy SEAL shit?!"

"Due to the price of ammo, and the geometric rise in man drama between gun nerds on the internet, we've decided to just ditch the whole "guns" in "girls and guns" thing and just sell makeup to chicks" said Roy Lindenbergh, president and CEO of Weapon Outfitters.  "The margins are higher, and the clients are a 17 times more likely to be female, and that's kind of relevant to my interests."

Weapon Outfitters later announced a discount code "MakeupOutfitters" would be activated to offer 10% off all in stock, in stock items to help shift their company's focus from Weapons to Makeup.

Colt Wheelguns in Media

Susan Coffey with a Colt Python Susan Coffey with a Colt Python

Susan Coffey as one of my favorite fictional characters from the 80s.

She's toting around a pal's rare, like new condition Colt Python (probably a lot more handy than a Crossbow in most scenarios).  For these poses, I imagined her as a perturbed woman on edge, and remembered the way ex girlfriends looked at me when i've wrong them.  The pistol isn't pointed at the viewer... but it's right there, seemingly hanging loosely from her relaxed wrist and firm grip.

One thing with the Colt Python/Anaconda in media is that no one ever seems to hold them straight, especially Rick in "Walking Dead". It's always held at an angle as if the power of the cartridge adds mass and weight of steel is heavier in cumbersome (and intimidating) revolvers than in semi-automatics.  Colt wheelguns are characters in their own right... and afforded some gravitas that a modern semi-automatic pistol would never get in the limelight.

Susan Coffey with a Colt Python Susan Coffey with a Colt Python

For most, weapons are talismans and symbols more than they are tools... more as something to flash to show off and intimidate than anything.  I can get that.  But truth is, any person who gets into a moving gunfight against a hostile at least roughly familiar with modern gunfighting styles be it from legit sources or movies/media with a revolver is likely to be outgunned with fire firing, fast reloading, accurate, and highly reliable semi-automatic pistols found on the market today.

That being said, there is something about a big honking wheel gun that makes everyone go "oooh" and "ahhhh" when it's show and tell time.  As a symbol, the Colt Python and Anaconda are unmatched in terms of beauty and intimidation, but when it comes to defensive, competitive, or professional use, the utility and value of a modern semi-automatic pistol is hard to beat.

Training Day with Ethereal Rose

Good times with Ethereal Rose running my brand new Hodge Defense AU Mod 1 rifle.

We did this video mostly as a proof of concept for our video capabilities... already have the camera and mic, might as well try something!  We did this as a two-fer project... one, to brush up Rose's skills, and two, to prove we could make a video that would be entertaining to watch

The primary goal of that afternoon however, was still training. As ALWAYS with training, we strive for extreme accuracy.  People seem to use "balance of speed and accuracy" as an excuse to just hose away on the range... after all, from the perspective of a bystander, the Grand Master and tacticool douchebag burning rounds look the same (until you look at the targets).  Is the goal of training to look cool?  It isn't for me, and so for this video we decided to keep Rose held to a high standard.

I subscribe to the belief that when you're dry, well rested, well fed, and happy on a well lit square range, you have better be capable of hitting the A-Zone, all the time.  It's something I've picked up from the various former Delta Force guys i've trained with (the ones who are public about it being: Larry Vickers, Pat Macnamara, Sheriff of Baghdad) That's why Rose is fairly conservative in her pace of fire:  only hits matter.  I'm sure that some internet commandos will fault her for not keeping both eyes open during firing, but it's a natural tendency when you're going for accuracy and I don't find fault with it.

To be honest, would have made for better footage if she was just hosing away and pretending to be a Grand Master level shooter... but "homie don't play that" so to speak.
